Communications and Development Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Internship

Report to: Dvora Rotenberg Executive Director
Period: 120 hours per semester for 3 credits over 3 months
Autumn semester: Sept-Oct-Nov. Winter semester: Jan-Feb-Mar. Spring semester: Apr-May-June.

Priority will be given to students in their final year.

Objectives of Communications & Fundraising Department:

  • Building Canadian Friends of Pearl Children brand across Ottawa and the rest of Canada.
  • Developing a comprehensive communications and fundraising strategy for international development.
  • Planning and implementing communications and fundraising activities and campaigns.
  • Supporting Canadian Friends of Pearl Children in developing and launching international campaigns.

Areas of Intern Responsibility:

  • Support the planning and realization of public-driven fundraising and visibility activities.
  • Seek sponsors for promotional material (print, graphic design, corporate collateral) and activities (venues, gift certificates, gifts in kind etc.).
  • Research a list of Canadian foundations, corporations and individuals that provide support for international development activities related to nutrition, food security and water / sanitation.
  • Develop ideas for outreach activities and promotional material.
  • Assist with writing and editing articles for release, for the CFPC newsletter and for the CFPC website.
  • Update and enhance CFPC website and use of social media.
  • Maintain and enhance a database of journalists and media contacts.
  • Distribute and follow-up on press releases.
  • Collect and edit photos, clips and images from missions and events for photo and video library.
  • Other support tasks as they emerge, particularly in international crises situations.

General qualifications:

  • Good organisational skills, ability to prioritise tasks, good attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Web design and social media experience are assets.
  • Excellent communication skills and professional telephone manner.
  • Ability to work under pressure and troubleshoot in difficult situations.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team.
  • Interest or knowledge of hunger & malnutrition in developing countries.
  • Interest in fundraising & event planning.
  • Interest in writing and editing.
  • Fluency in spoken English and French. Written French is an asset.
