Grant Writing Internship

Canadian Friends of Pearl Children a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to improving the quality of life of orphans and disadvantaged children throughout Uganda. Our goals are to provide a safe and healthy living environment, proper nutrition, health care and quality education. We are currently providing aid to The Pearl Children Care Centre in Jinja, Uganda, Mbale, Uganda and will soon be providing aid to Western Kenya as well.

Context:
CFPC’s current three-year strategic plan calls expansion of financial resources through seeking Grants from bilateral NGOs, CIDA and foundation Grants , a concrete contribution to education development through partnership programming. From 2011 to 2013, CFPC-Canada will embark on developing and implementing projects funded by specific donors, foundation & NGOs Grants. This will involve developing the analyses and approaches necessary to develop project proposals and to work in partnerships as well as mobilizing the financial contributions necessary to support such work. The position of program development assistant (Grants Writer), reporting to the Executive Director, has been designed to support our initial work in both these areas.

Outputs:
1. An annotated list of Canadian foundations linking their funding history and priorities to CFPC areas of intervention.
2. Draft proposals for foundations based on projects developed in the CFPC’s overseas missions.
3. A context analysis in the areas of malnutrition, food security, water and sanitation and Quality Education among the following countries (to be determined): Uganda and in 2012 -Kenya.
4. An annotated list of leading NGOs in the above-mentioned areas of intervention in the countries specified.

Tasks:- Establish a short list of philanthropic foundations in Canada based on their international interests.
- Conduct research (Internet, phone calls etc.) on the foundations to determine their funding mechanisms including the proposal procedure, deadlines, funding limits, guidelines etc.
- Draft proposals to foundations based on existing project plans.
- Identify CIDA priorities in the various countries identified.
- Conduct research on country contexts in CFPC areas of interventions.
- Identify leading NGOs in the above areas.
- Produce periodic reports of findings.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a pertinent field;
- Able to read and speak English and French; able to write in one or the other;
- Good written communications skills
- Able to conduct documentary research and compile results
- Demonstrated interest and/or interest in the field of international cooperation

Conditions:
- Flexible work schedule, part-time or full time. We ask for a commitment to work 140 hours or more the period of April– Sept, 2011;
- Unpaid, volunteer mandate
- Open to collaborating on credit recognition for university programs
